The Chairman’s Bao is a resource (web & app) that makes current news items (including human interest pieces) accessible to Mandarin learners. (报纸 bàozhǐ means newspaper in Mandarin.) You’ll learn the vocabulary and structures needed to read advanced news and non-fiction writing while also learning the vocabulary to discuss topics you’re interested in. The site also has a section for Legends, including biographies of modern day celebrities and historical figures, along with some traditional myths.

Accompanying each text, you’ll find many reading and listening practice activities to help learn the key vocabulary and structures from the article or story.

Unfortunately, full access to the website requires a subscription, but here are two articles currently free. Don’t forget to try out the Reading and Listening practice exercises!

The Chairman’s Bao Blog is also a great (free) resource for learners, including strategies, resources, cultural information, and more!
